3 website mistakes Christian entrepreneurs make

This blog is based on the podcast episode “Top 3 Common Website Mistakes, with Holly Fisher”. In that episode, Holly goes deeper into these mistakes and mentioned a couple of must-haves for your website.

It can be really tough if you're a solopreneur.
You have to do everything by yourself, from coming up with a brand name to doing your own marketing.

Of course, you try to do it all when you are just starting out.
Most people do.
That’s why we provide these blogs as Born to Fly.

So please read them and apply them to your business to help you become a better entrepreneur.

But know that when things don’t go the way you planned, there are always people willing to help you out.
They are just a question away 🙂.

3 common website mistakes

Holly Fisher from Fisher Creative has provided us with 3 common website mistakes that people make so you can avoid them when creating your website for the first time or updating it for the umpteenth time.

Whether you are using Wordpress, Squarespace, or another platform, any person can make these website mistakes, regardless of how well-developed the platform you use is.

1.Your website is confusing

Your website shouldn't just be a portfolio. It shouldn't just be a placeholder on the internet.
Your website should be getting leads and sales, and it should be generating business for you. So if it's not, then it's likely that your website is confusing.

People don't understand exactly what it is that you do.

They don't really understand exactly how you can help them.

It might be that you are over-educating people by proving too much text.

It might be that your menu has too many options.

Visitors to your website will suffer from this overwhelm. They don't know what they’re supposed to look at first. Let alone what they are supposed to do.

And when people are overwhelmed, they typically don't take any action at all. That’s when you lose them.

So a good thing to think about is the number of pages on your website. Most people that are in a service-based business—coaches, consultants, marketing professionals—probably don't need more than four to six pages max.

2. No clear call to action

Many people don’t have a clear call to action.

A call to action is the “call, book a consultation call, schedule a meeting, buy, shop” placed as a button on your website.

There are two problems here.

One, people have a call to action that’s too vague.

Two, people have too many calls to action.

If you have a call to action that is vague, like “contact me”, then the visitor doesn’t know what to do.
What does he or she need to contact you about?
Does it need to be an email?
You want them to buy something, you want them to schedule that appointment or book a demo or download a free trial of your software.

When you have too many calls to action, again people feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do first.

So create one clear call to action and have that all over your website.

3. There’s no lead generation

Do you capture email addresses from people visiting your website? If your answer is no, then you are making this mistake.

Not everybody that lands on your website is ready to buy at that moment. Especially if you have a higher dollar offer or something that costs a little bit more or is a little more of a time commitment.
People may be like, I need to just check this out a little bit. So you definitely want to have something on the website that's going to grab their email address, which can be a free guide, video series, a test, whatever it is.

It’s key to have that on your website for people who aren’t quite ready yet to make that purchase.

Improve your website

Use these three mistakes to improve your website. Make sure you don’t overwhelm visitors with too much information, there are others ways to share more.

Pick one clear call to action to make sure your page converts, and have a lead generation in place so people can get some value through a freebie and you get an email address that you can follow up on.
