4 tips for Tiktok

Tips for TikTok for Christian entrepreneurs

This blog is based on episode 064 of the Born to Fly Podcast:

“Super Useful Tips for TikTok, with Alex Hitt.”

TikTok, we all know the hype. People are thrilled about the reach and the large number of views you can easily get—supposedly so much more than on Instagram or Facebook.

Is it true?

Let’s find out in this interview with Social Media expert and TikTok guy Alex Hitt.

Is TikTok a social media for everyone?

Alex:

There's a niche for everybody on TikTok. You could be a left-handed Austrian piano player and you could probably still find a community on TikTok.

So yes, it’s a social media platform for everyone.

Should everybody use it?

I think everybody needs to be on TikTok. It’s the most popular, most downloaded platform in the last three years. People maybe have a dated perspective on it but it’s not about dance videos anymore. It’s like the beginning of YouTube, when not a lot of videos were out there and you could be found easily.

So you have that kind of once-in-a-decade opportunity here today, right now, to invest in TikTok. To build that following before everybody else does and potentially benefit for a long time to come.

So, yes, I definitely think all businesses should be on TikTok, especially right now because the competition is so low.

What’s the biggest difference with other social media platforms? What makes TikTok unique?

The discoverability, meaning people finding you, is the highest out of any other social media platform. It's not based on who you're already connected with.

TikTok is trying to send you content that they think is interesting to you, and so you're constantly seeing new content that TikTok is curating and suggesting to you based upon your particular likes and interests.

So it's interest-based more than connection-based or relationship-based like the other social media where things get pushed into your timeline from your connections.

Also, TikTok is a short-form video platform. The average viral video on TikTok is like 17 seconds long. It’s fast. You need to get your name and what you do out in 17 seconds. That’s challenging and fun!

Can you share some TikTok tips for newbies?

#1 Start producing videos

Literally, just hold your camera up to your face.

Don't look down into your camera.

Hold it a little bit above your face and start to produce videos.

You might think, what do I talk about?

What you’re passionate about!

I share the latest updates of TikTok. I share how to make your videos more attractive. I share how to step-by-step add captions to your videos.

You can do the same for your business.

You'll notice that all pretty successful TikTok videos follow a similar style of storytelling, which is popularized by Russell Brunson.

It's called The Hook, the Story, and the Offer.

So a hook is something that you say at the beginning of the video to catch people's attention. And these are things that you could think of this as the headline of a newspaper.

Then share the story. Combine information and entertainment. Don’t forget the entertaining part since TikTok is a platform for entertainment rather than teaching.

And then close with the offer: to follow you, to connect with you, to reach out to you, etc.

#2 Quantity is important

The amount of videos that you post is important. People consume a lot on TikTok and you got to feed them. Don’t worry about the quality of the video, those rules don’t apply to TikTok. The shiny, polished videos don’t do well on TikTok because they come across as too produced and have less credibility/authenticity.

#3 Be consistent in your message and on topic

Remember, TikTok pushes your videos out for you. They search for the right audience and place your video in front of them.

If you change the subject you talk about every week, it will be hard for TikTok to categorize you. Therefore, be consistent and clear on what subject you’re the expert.

#4 Edit your videos

It’s important to add captions and some headers to your videos. The built-in editor of TikTok is the one I use most.

Then there’s also Capcut which is pretty good and easy to work with.
