“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”–Genesis 2:2-3

I currently volunteer with the teen’s class at my church, and we’ve been going through the creation account in Genesis chapters 1 and 2 with the Answers in Genesis Curriculum.

We were amazed at how God demonstrated His power to create and spoke things into being. I was also encouraged to follow God’s pattern of work having made us all in His image and likeness.

There were three lessons I drew from the creation account that we as business owners can imitate in reading Genesis 1.

  1. God was consistent in His work: God had a plan and a purpose to create, and he was consistent in carrying everything out. Each day brought a new addition to the creation. With God, there is no such thing as “unfinished business”. As Isaiah 14:24 says “The LORD Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen.”
  2. God values rest: He worked for six days and rested on the seventh. God never gets tired or need to sleep. He was leaving us a pattern to follow and separating a special day for us to remember His acts and rest from our regular work (Exodus 20:8-11).
  3. God rejoiced over His Work: At the end of each creation day, God saw that it was good. He took delight in His work and had pleasure in it. Psalm 104:31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works”

These are all lessons that we can draw from and live out in our respective business. We are encouraged to plan and carry out our work diligently, taking breaks or times of rest and to enjoy what we do. So three questions to ponder:

  • Do you remain consistent in your work?
  • Do you set aside time for rest?
  • Do you enjoy what you do?

‘Father, we thank you that as Christians we are encouraged to follow your ways to live this life. We ask Holy Father that you give us the wisdom, strength and will to accomplish all the work you have given us to do. We acknowledge we are unable to do this on our own. We also pray that you will enable us to take time of rest to remember all that you have done for us. Lord, remind us that whatever our work, to enjoy it knowing it is all for your glory. We thank you for everything. Amen”

May you have a joyful month ahead,
