Devotional - Where is Your Fortified Tower?

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. " -  Proverbs 18:10

Fortified towers were used in the ancient world as a place of safety where people could run to in the midst of danger.

The Bible draws on this imagery to demonstrate how God is our refuge in times of trouble.

Proverbs 18:10 says, "The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."

We are first to recognize the God we serve is a covenant-keeping God. Yahweh (LORD) revealed Himself to Moses and to Israel as He rescued them from slavery in Egypt. He says, " I AM that I AM." He is the all-sufficient and eternal God to whom we can rest completely knowing He is the faithful God who always keeps his promise. This is the God we are told to run to.

Who runs to God? It is the righteous. These are people who have tasted the goodness of God in Him, saving them from their sins, and are now walking in obedience and trust.

The result?  They are safe.

Where do you run to in the midst of danger and troubles?

Many will look to money and all the things the world promises that will ease the pain and make you feel good. There is only one place to find true safety; in the presence of God.

We are encouraged to "run."  This signals urgency and prompt action.  Yet how often we do everything our own way and then drag ourselves to God as a last resort. Everything else failed, let me try God. No, we are told to run the moment we face trouble. You see in the presence of God there is freedom, safety, and deliverance. It's an urgent call to trust in God at all times even when we don't understand why things happened.

We all face troubles from all fronts. Whether health crisis, work and personal issues, whatever it may be, God says, "Come to me and you will find rest for your souls."

Let's pray:
Father, we will sing of your strength and your love for you are our refuge in times of trouble.
Teach us to run to you and to trust in you always.  Amen.

Blessings,
