Devotional - Business advice from the Bible

"Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips"  — Proverbs 27:2

Read time: 2 minutes

Hi Reader,

Sometimes you come across a verse in the Bible, and it just hits you.

Do you recognize that?

It happened when I read Proverbs 27:2:

“Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.”

I read it and thought, this is straightforward business advice

When it comes to marketing and sales, there are lots of experts out there, claiming to have the answer. Many of them often mentioned that reviews are the way to go if you want to build credibility

I guess they do have a point there.
Since… Scripture tells us so

Not my own lips should praise what I offer, but others’ can vouch for me.

Other people can leave a review.
They can refer me to friends.
They can be rewarded if they bring in new business.

The Bible teaches that boasting about yourself isn't a humble act. Not that I like boasting anyway—I'm too shy—but acknowledging that you shouldn’t boast about yourself (or your business) takes some pressure off the entire marketing and sales process.

I don't have to talk about myself all the time, be present on social media, post 5x a week, or send 5 emails a month.

I can put the ball in the court of my clients. Since it should be about someone else. Not me.

If I need to rely on what others say about me, my focus shifts from me to them

My service becomes the tool I use to satisfy them. Perhaps overdelivering is the key to blowing minds with exceptional surprises.

All that is important is to make my customers happy. To truly help them.

And isn't that exactly why we're in business or starting one up?

I love these verses of wisdom in scripture. It's clear and so practical.

The other day, I realized that there is no hard truth apart from the Bible. I've heard so much contradicting marketing advice over the years, that I've decided to just follow my heart.

How long is the ideal email?
What headings work?
What type of value do you offer?
How many links do you include?

It’s always a different answer.

I don't care anymore.
I just want to make sure my emails reflect me. They are my nuggets for you.

And the only Truth that I allow in business, is God's Word.

Reader, do you have one of those verses that changed your approach to business?

Don't hesitate to share.

Blessings,
Jane
