You Expected The Wrong Thing

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."  — Matthew 6:33

Hi Reader,

Wrong expectations lead to disappointment.

This statement caught me at the beginning of this year.

I had a convincing expectation that overnight, multiple donations would be made to cover Born to Fly’s costs

But it didn’t happen.

There was one donation after the first email and, to be honest, that felt disappointing.

I started wondering: what could I learn here?
I was certain that God wanted me to continue my work for this community, but then why wasn’t He “coming through”?

Something in me said it had to do with expectations. God can’t disappoint us if we have the right expectations---if our expectations align with God’s plan and will.

How realistic was the expectation I had?
How God-aligned was it?

I wanted a solution overnight, but it might take weeks before God provides—the fact is that, He provides.

I asked God about it, and He told me to push through. To not give up
He reminded me to first seek the Kingdom and its righteousness and all else will be given.

I learned that I had built an expectation based on a certain way of thinking.
It has to go this way, because…
… it's the norm…
…science has proven it…
…it worked with others…
…I want it this way.

But what does God want?

What expectations can I have according to Him?
What’s His way of thinking?

We’re more than two months into 2025, so how did this continue?

Over time, more donations came in, and I saw God’s faithfulness in it all. I felt my gratitude grow for the opportunity to land in your inbox and for the fact that some of you value the content so much that you financially support it—THANK YOU!

The donations have not yet covered all the costs of Born to Fly, but I’m grateful nevertheless for the part that did get covered and for the lesson that I learned.

I didn’t want to include the donation link in my emails anymore, but after sharing my story in this one, it would have been weird not to. So you can find it one last time in the P.S.

Expectations influence everything, also the important stuff, like relationships and trust in God

What do we base our expectations on?

Do we share our expectations with others in relationships, for example? We can’t read each other’s minds, so to prevent unexpected outcomes or unmet expectations, let’s share them.

Lesson learned.
The importance of reading the Word and communicating with God is unshakable.
If we know His will, desire to follow it, and are able to let all the other noise behind the door, we can’t go wrong with our expectations.

Manage expectations right, then manage the rest.
I’m not saying it’s easy, but we can try our best.

Blessings,
Jane
