Devotional - Delight in the Word of God
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers." — Psalms 1:1-3

Dear readers,
Recent research from the Barna Group and Lifeway Research Group has shared data
on the state of regular Bible reading among Christians in the U.S. It revealed that about
a third of Christians engage daily with the Word of God.
Bible reading is often seen as a “duty,” but how often do we see it as a “delight”?
If we delight in something or someone, it is expressed in how much time we give.
“We sincerely want Christ as the supreme focus of our lives, but it is often difficult to
keep our focus sharp amidst the daily things clamoring for our attention”*
The Psalmist in Psalm 1 learned the secret to truly living a blessed life.
The Psalm starts off with the Hebrew word for blessed, “Ashar.” This describes someone who has an altogether sense of well-being from living in tune with God.
In verse 1, he lives a life different from the wicked. He does not walk, stand, or sit in the company of mockers.
Verse 2 reveals the secret to his daily life: he regularly engages with the Word of God.
Notice, “he delights in the law of God and meditates on it day and night.” This doesn’t
mean he sits in one place and reads all day, but even when he is not reading, his
thoughts are guided by the Word of God. He thinks through and reasons with the Word
of God.
So, we see in verse 3 that he is like a tree planted by streams of water that produces fruit and prospers in what he does.
May this be an encouragement to all of us, wherever God has placed us—whether a
stay-at-home mom, business owner, teacher, or professional.
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly so that your life becomes an instrument to bring light and hope to others, and your joy and peace come only from God.
Let's pray:
Father, help all of us to become people who daily engage with Your Word and delight in
it through the power of Your Holy Spirit.
Amen.
