Devotional - You don’t need 8h of sleep
READ TIME: 2 minutes
Dear readers,
Perhaps you opened this email because you were triggered by the subject.
“I DON’T need sleep? Where do I sign up?”
But the subject is just a sentence without context.
The context of the subject is this:
I remember the moment God overruled my need for sleep.
I was in a state of big sleep deprivation: my eldest was 2, my youngest a newborn. I had scheduled to conjure up another newsletter for Born to Fly but I was just too tired.
My baby was fussy all the way, sleeping in no way...
I got irritated.
Can’t I just have one quick moment to write and then sleep?
I prayed to God to receive energy and the peace out of this world as He so freely gives (John 14:27), since my response told me I was obviously lacking it.
And almost immediately, I got pepped up, fed my baby girl first, put her to SLEEP, and typed a newsletter.
I didn’t sleep a whole night, but I still got refreshed.
What I learned here is this:
If God asks you to work on something and finish it in time, He’ll make sure your 5-hour night will feel like an 8-hour one.
If God has called you to be a parent, He’ll make sure you’ll survive those broken nights with a newborn.
If God motivated you to help a friend in need and it takes more time than expected, He’ll provide you the rest you need.
If God is leading you into something that might cost you some sleep, He’ll give you the refreshment as though you did get the sleep.
God is the provider of everything, including good, solid sleep.
He’s the provider of energy.
He’s the provider of rest (Matt. 11:28)
He can make you feel rested even if science says you didn’t get enough sleep.
Am I saying you should ditch the pursuit of a good 8 hour night?
No. But I do say that it’s not holy. It’s not a law.
For sure, it’s important.
It’s extremely important to sleep, but God can overrule it and still grant you the same result as a good night's sleep.
It reminds me of the fringe moments that Hannah Brencher (my 100th guest on the podcast) talked about in one of her newsletters.
Those are moments in which you are actually too tired and just want to curl up on the couch or doze off into a deep sleep.
In those moments, God can move greatly.
In that weakness, His power is made perfect.
So, if you are tired, it means it’s not the end.
If God leads you into continuing what you’re doing, go for it. (I think the ‘God leading you’’, is crucial here)
Trust that God will give you the rest and peace that you need. He can break the rules of nature, He can energize a body in an hour if He pleases.
I’m learning to surrender every bit of my life to Him, including sleep.
How about you, reader?
What part of your life are you surrendering right now?
I’d love to know.
Blessings,
Jane
