Devotional - The power of writing things down

“...tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” —Joshua 4:7

I have a tendency to write things down about the now and the future—brain waves, prayers, dreams, and desires.

But the passage in Joshua 4, in combination with a sermon from years ago, reminded me how important it is to not forget the things God has done in the past.
The pastor who delivered the message had a box of collectibles, representing miracles God had done in his life—his memorial stones.

I didn’t get a box like that, thinking I could remember past events, and—no surprise—I forgot!

From now on, I will collect my memorial stones. In writing.

Those words in ink will serve as the ultimate proof that God is at work in my life—a huge need in times when I feel insecure.

I want to invite you to join me in writing things down.

“But Jane, you’re a writer and I’m not.”
That doesn’t matter.

You don’t have to write novels. You just have to write in your own way.

The power of writing things down applies to anyone who can scribble down words.

What is that power?
Writing things down can trigger a memory—making you grateful.

It can help you memorize—God’s word at the top of your head;

Clarify what’s going on in your brain;

Track progress—keeping you motivated to continue;

Process emotions—finding meaning and expression behind them;

Stimulate creativity—exploring new ways and ideas to go about business and life;

Teach and tell others—preserving stories and knowledge that would otherwise be lost.

As the end of the year approaches, take steps to write things down.

Write down beautiful things that have happened to you.

Dreams that you dream about.

Miracles that took place.

Goals for next year.

Pick something that will help your business excel for God’s glory.

If you need more confidence; then proof of God’s working hand might be what you need.
If you need more structure; then pick some goals with God and make sure you actually pursue them.

I don’t care what you chose, I care that you try.

Let me know if you are planning on exploring this, [name], or if this has been working great for you in the past.

Blessings,

Jane & Team Born to Fly
